Often obscured, the horizon separates all vision into two categories: what intersects Earth’s surface and what does not. The word “horizon” itself comes from the Greek word “horizōn kyklos” meaning “separating circle.” Before the invention of the radio, this geometric calculation was the absolute maximum range of communication and vision. Sailors have used this line for thousands of the years to stabilize posture. This imaginary line to which all things recede for the perceiver is what artists have depicted for thousands of years. The insights, realizations and discoveries that have been chartered by one looking at the horizon are innumerable. In fact, the horizon was what lead to the discovery of the Americas!

In his trips to the Netherlands, Reynolds came across the immense amount of untamed land that had no obstructions to the natural sky. Since there are no buildings or towers to block the viewers vista, almost 80% of these paintings are complete sky. In Robert Reynolds depictions of the horizon, he works to draw attention to a line that often goes unnoticed in paintings and in life. It’s almost as if he‘s asking the observer, “Is this line the connector or divider between heaven and Earth?” Such a view can easily elicit feelings of longing and wonder for the beauty that is all around us which we often forget to admire.

Due to buildings and towers that take up most of the skyline these days, we often forget to marvel in the awesomeness that is the sky. I remember once when I was on a plane, I noticed the curved edges of the horizon. This was the first time in my life I had seen physical evidence with my own eyes that the Earth was round. It blew my mind that I went so long without seeing such a sight and now when I look at these paintings which draw such attention to the minor line that often go unnoticed in daily life, I’m glad to see that this artist has not yet forgotten the beauty of the horizon.

Renaissance Press Summer and Fall 2013 Workshops

Renaissance Press workshops are taught or co-taught by Paul Taylor Director of Renaissance Press. Paul’s work with photography and printmaking spans over thirty years of intensive research, art-making, invention, teaching, and collaborations with artists. Paul has taught in both the printmaking and photography departments at The Rhode Island School of Design where he currently teaches courses in Photogravure, Photopolymer and Hybrid Printmaking. Hybrid Printmaking is a course that explores  the interweaving of a wide range of processes, from traditional intaglio techniques to digital transfer.

Horizons: New Work by
Robert Reynolds

Reynolds Fine Art is pleased to present new work by gallery owner and namesake, Robert Reynolds.
Stemming from numerous visits to the Netherlands, Reynolds new body of oil paintings and monoprints boasts vivid Dutch landscapes as its subject. The unique, tabletop flatness of this region sparked the artist’s curiosity when he noticed a recurring, and often over looked, feature that was unavoidable in each vista: the horizon. Thus, Reynolds was prompted to investigate the idea of the horizon in history and how we experience it everyday, whether we realize it or not. Questions such as if this line acts as a joiner or a divider between heaven and earth motivated the artist and come through each work to evoke feelings of longing and wonder in the viewer. These works challenge the mundane concept of a horizon line to become a desire to know the unknowable and mystery of the distance.
